Schur Q-functions and spin characters of symmetric groups I

چکیده
In a classic paper, I. Schur [6] introduced a class of symmetric functions, now called Schur Qfunctions, in order to determine the irreducible spin (projective) characters of symmetric groups. In the case of the ordinary characters of symmetric groups, going back to the early work of D. E. Littlewood and A. R. Richardson [3], the corresponding Schur functions have been used to give useful combinatorial formulae for determining explicit values for these characters (see for example [2]). Our aim in this paper is to obtain combinatorial formulae for the spin characters. We see that as always in the spin case, the formulae are considerably more complicated with a number of new interesting phenomena arising.

q-Deformed Two-Dimensional Yang-Mills Theory and Hecke Algebras
We derive the q-deformation of the chiral Gross-Taylor holomorphic string large N expansion of two dimensional SU (N ) Yang-Mills theory. Delta functions on symmetric group algebras are replaced by the corresponding objects (canonical trace functions) for Hecke algebras. The role of the Schur-Weyl duality between unitary groups and symmetric groups is now played by q-deformed Schur-Weyl duality...

متن کاملOn Reduced Q-functions
Schur’s Q-functions with reduced variables are discussed by employing a combinatorics of strict partitions. They are called reduced Q-functions. We give a description of the linear relations among reduced Q-functions. §0 Introduction Q-functions were introduced by Schur in his study of projective representations of symmetric groups. They are symmetric functions and, if we express them in terms ...
متن کاملShifted Schur Functions Ii. Binomial Formula for Characters of Classical Groups
Let G be any of the complex classical groups GL(n) , SO(2n + 1) , Sp(2n) , O(2n) , let g denote the Lie algebra of G , and let Z(g) denote the subalgebra of G -invariants in the universal enveloping algebra U(g) . We derive a Taylortype expansion for finite-dimensional characters of G (the binomial formula) and use it to specify a distinguished linear basis in Z(g) . The eigenvalues of the basi...
متن کاملCharacter Formulas for q-Rook Monoid Algebras
The q-rook monoid Rn(q) is a semisimple C(q)-algebra that specializes when q → 1 to C[Rn], where Rn is the monoid of n × n matrices with entries from {0, 1} and at most one nonzero entry in each row and column. We use a Schur-Weyl duality between Rn(q) and the quantum general linear group Uqgl(r ) to compute a Frobenius formula, in the ring of symmetric functions, for the irreducible characters...
